SOCIAL STUDIES - Books one, two and three: a trilogy of short story anthologies

SOCIAL STUDIES - Book One is sub-titled "Dying To Be Popular"

Book Two is sub-titled "Shattered and Broken"

Book Three is sub-titled "Weaving Alice".

Each short story anthology in this trilogy is a compilation of 12 short stories with the focus on social issues including such subjects as spousal abuse, alzheimer, elder abuse, child abuse, and animal welfare. I have written in this trilogy of anthologies about contemporary topics that sadly are far too common in the world in which we live.

Review by Eleanor Lambert; Bermuda.
I just read "Find Firinn" and enjoyed it immensely. It brought back a few memories of my own and of course thought immediately of my sister-in-law. Anne, who was from Scotland. I gave this story 5 stars.

From the Author

The relationship between Uncle Farlan and his young niece is enduring. Yes, he taught her to respect and always remember their Scottish heritage but even more important is the loyalty and love the two share throughout life up to the day of his death. Alzheimer Disease is a terrible thief. But even Alzheimer could not steal Farlan's memory of the secret he shared with his niece.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Kindle or Print Format?

Friends often tell me that they prefer print format to Kindle format when reading a story.  "I like the feel of a real book in my hands," one will say.

"When is it coming out  in print?" another will ask.

I, personally, prefer to buy my books in print format.  I don't even own a Kindle (yet).

Yet, statistics tell me that when it comes to sales more books in Kindle format are sold than those available as paperback.

Of course, price could be a factor.  It is less expensive to buy a Kindle Book.

An E-reader is a veritable library.   It takes up very little space unlike our paperbacks and other books in print format which fill bookshelves in our homes.

I find it very interesting to observe the ratings for books in the Amazon Kindle Stores.   A Kindle Book with a ranking of #2 or 5 or 12 or 27 in the Kindle store, for example, may well have a ranking somewhere up in the millions for its print copy version.  The same book - same story.

Although I enjoy watching what I call this numbers game it is important for a shopper to remember that this ranking is a reflection of the number of sales; not in reference to the quality of the story.   The same great story can rank high or low on the same scale; the Kindle with a high rating and the print format of the same book with a low rating.  Please don't let a low ranking number on a print format book deter you from making the purchase.  It simply means that more people are enamoured with the Kindle format.

Some say the day may come when we will no longer have any books in print format.  All will be electronic.   We live in a fast changing world.

As for me I do my best to offer my readers a choice.

All my books are available in Kindle format on all Amazon sites.

Some of my books are available in print format on all Amazon sites as well as directly from the printer, createspace.com    In time I will be increasing the number of books available in print format.

Whichever format you choose, it is my hope that you will enjoy the adventures my characters are waiting to take you on.

Recompense - a novella

One of my novellas titled "Recompense" is offered free today only in the Kindle Store.

Currently #39 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Relationships > Love & Romance

Maurice Wilson lives in Salt River, a small town near Cape Town, South Africa. He is the son of a black father and a Caucasian mother. After the sudden death of his parents he makes the decision to move to High River, Alberta, Canada, the place of his mother’s birth in search of a sense of belonging. He becomes a Canadian citizen, is employed as a mail carrier for Canada Post. The morning of his first day on the job he meets Alison Pierce, a plain woman whose silent passions run deep. Shortly into her relationship with Maurice all her hopes for fulfillment plummet however she continues to live with him for more than twenty-five years. In their later years Maurice and Alison become acquainted with the Internet and with the Senior Befriender Chat Room. When temptation with the name of Conrad enters their lives the shared bonds of loyalty and trust are put in jeopardy. Will deception rule the day?

Bringing two worlds together was my goal in bringing together Maurice from Salt River, Capetown, South Africa and Alison, a postal clerk in High River, Alberta, Canada. Cultures blend but passion is lacking. I thought of these two people living together as a couple; not too unlike many couples who live together for years in unsatisfactory boring relationships. Then I thought what if, when they reach their senior years, something happens to wake them up? That's when I decided to introduce Conrad and the Senior Befriender Chatroom. Writing "RECOMPENSE' was an enjoyable challenge. Most of us are unused to reading about senior men and women in romantic situations .......... I thought maybe it is time that I write something that will make us see our elders through new eyes.

REAWAKENING - a review

" Let me first wipe my droplets of moisture from my eyes. Some shed from sadness of a love so strong and true, that never seems to be a " togetherness of two the way I would hope. Then some shed for the amazing job Austin did in making me laugh at the craziness of our "human" lives.
"Reawakening" is a story I could not give anything less than 5 stars too. It is a love story, mixed with sci-fi, also mixed with drama and the comedy that sneaks up if you have the ability to laugh at oneself. Would I go as far as calling this book a romance...no I cannot! It is a book of love, true love, something many think they know, but will realize if by this story very few may actually have it right. A love on earth were age, appearance were not important to the two involved, happiness, comfort, and love was without a question in their lives. A must read for men and women.

SARA, a Canadian Saga -- some reviews ........

Some Reviews of Sara, a Canadian Saga:

"Your well-written book brought memories of actual places and people to me. I was a child growing up on Prince Edward Island in the dirty thirties." K. Austin

"I've read your book already and loved the story. It reminded me of the stories my parents and grandparents used to relate about the 20's and 30's, Your story will sell very well with the older audience and educate the younger ones. They were not easy days for anyone." Judy Donovan-McDonald.

"I received SARA on Tuesday and cóuldn't wait to read it. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed the story especially the streets in Toronto. It brought back a lot of memories. It is good for the soul to remember the past. Could that be why we call them the good old days? Looking forward to a sequel. Maureen Jones-Motchan.

"I truly enjoyed reading SARA. At times I laughed and at other times I felt tears welling up. It was such a good story, well written and I loved it." Eleanor Lambert.

I just finished reading "Sara."
I took the book to work with me where I was teaching a grade 7 class. The children were directed to write about a time when they or someone they knew, demonstrated perseverance. I held up the book and used "Sara" as an example of a woman who demonstrated perseverance. I also spoke to the fact that the author demonstrated this quality in her determination to have her story published. You would not believe the response from these kids - many wanted to know if they could get it at Chapters. This story is uniquely Canadian and should be marketed to adolescents as part of their Canadian heritage. "Sara" is a narrative that figures in the histories of Canadian families everywhere. I will be passing this on to my son!
The line that cracked me up and drew me in for good:
"Their mother set the steaming bowls of vegetables in the centre of the large, old, wooden table that no amount of wax and polish could dignify." (p. 11)
I won't over-analyze why this struck me as hilarious, it just did. What sad, sad state Rebecca was in over her table. This table is a silent witness to generations of love, hope, fear, strife, courage, ignorance and finally, understanding. What a beautiful metaphor for an old scratched up, banged around history that none of us can escape and our fear of endlessly repeating it.
Thank-you for inviting us to the table.
Karen Preston.

SARA, A CANADIAN SAGA-ANOTHER EARLY SPRING READ!
In Canada, many of us grew up reading about Anne of Green Gables, a fictional early 20th century girl who became part of our cultural identity and childhood memories.
In this 21st century, allow me to introduce Sara, a Canadian Saga, written by Audrey Austin from Elliot Lake, Ontario. For first-time novelist, Austin, the experience of "Letting her [Sara] out into the world was like watching my first child go off to kindergarten; hopeful yet frightening". After reading this all-to-brief novel, Audrey Austin's hopes have been well-founded.
A glimpse at the cover image by Susan Krupp takes one into the setting of this historical fiction with its early 1900's clothing styles and older wooden buildings. Rustic and sepia toned, the graphic carries readers back to the early 20th century in a story that follows main character Sara from 1916 to the 50s.
The Maritime setting of Prince Edward Island is home to ten-year old Sara and her family. She grows to adulthood, as does Roy from Springhill, Nova Scotia, through difficult economic times which, eventually, lead to mid-century Ontario.
Austin has integrated the spirit of the Eastern Canadian cultural location with mention of fiddles and step dances, games of cards and crokinole that passed the time in the pre-social media era.
In this book, family relationships play a central part of the story, as in the character of Sara's mother, Rebecca, a strong minded woman, challenged by harsh times and the struggle to raise a family with her husband.
Meanwhile, in Nova Scotia, generations of miners have worked at mining coal, a job that occupies Roy's father, Luke. The family is a part of the Salvation Army with Roy and his sister being involved with playing the cornet and singing. It is a faith-based group but, importantly, involves a social outlet as well for people in the small communities at the heart of this novel.
The children, Sara and Roy, grow up in their communities, helping out with daily chores, forming their own ideas of what they want in the future. However, no spoilers here. Suffice it to say, they do face obstacles, typical for the times in Canada with the "goldanged" Depression being a considerable challenge.
Audrey Austin, successfully, integrates highlights of the early 20th century era along with the everyday aspects such as the Rawleigh Company that sold products to households in Canada and the United States; growing emergence of telephone and cars; even "yellowing scribblers". Sara's discovery of "scribblers" is an element with which many readers will identify. In these notebooks, Sara has shared her thoughts and dreams, an experience shared by many of us!
In a recent e-interview, Audrey Austin noted that "SARA enjoys a general audience from young adult to seniors, some of whom have memory of the Great Depression and its impact on Canadian families". This book is a case in point for the writing of historical fiction. In this genre, one gets a glimpse of the past, from family life to economic hardships and job success in early 20th century Canada. Audrey Austin admits that the book contains "slivers of actual happenings" from life; however, the challenge of creativity in writing historical fiction is met with this new character, Sara, and her companions.
As with Anne of Green Gables, this young fictional character is a character who tells us much about our country's past. For a peak at early 20th century Canada, check out Sara, a Canadian Saga.

Kindle Offerings on Amazon sites

If I have not miscounted I now have 49 book offerings available in Kindle format on all Amazon sites.

Of these forty-nine, five are novels; three are novellas; four are short story anthologies; one is a personal growth manual; three are stories written for children.  The balance are short stories which, like Daniel, dare to stand alone.

Perhaps you will read one of these short stories and be persuaded to buy the anthology in which it is included.

I am currently working on my next novel which is titled Crabapple Court.

For those of you who prefer  a book in print format I'm happy to say that Sara, a Canadian Saga; Moose Road - a Canadian Tragedy; and  Social Studies - Books one, two and three are available on all Amazon sites as well as directly through the printer at createspace.com

I'm delighted that Susan Ruby K. of Yuneekpix.com is the cover designer for all my books in print format.

A few copies of REAWAKENING
are available in print format
directly from me.

The past six years have been busy ones for me writing-wise and I feel very happy and proud of what I have achieved.    I am very grateful to Maggie Kirton of Wynterblue Publishing Canada who has been there for me.  My first foray into self-publishing books in print format is much more recent - this week actually.   And I am over the moon that I've been able to learn more about the formatting and more technical aspects of books and their publication.

Had I been a younger woman when I started this writing adventure I may have considered some of the more traditional avenues of publication.

But I am an independent spirit and in the ever-evolving process I have discovered
that independent publishing
is where I am feeling very much at home.

I am happy.  I am grateful.

I hope you enjoy the adventures on which my characters take you.

Print copies available on all Amazon sites and from Create Space.

Kindle copies available on all Amazon sites.

You will find me and many of my "book pages" on Facebook.

You will also find me on Twitter; Linked In; Goodreads; Pinterest; Google; and Blogger.

Thank you for your continued encouragement and support.  Thanks for your positive reviews on Goodreads and Amazon.  And thank you very much for buying my books.

Weaving Alice ...........

One of the short stories found in SOCIAL STUDIES - Book Three is titled WEAVING ALICE. It is a short story about a meeting on earth between personified good and evil. The mystical ending will bring a smile to your face.

Imagine if you will a mystical, magical gift of tapestry creation powerful enough to eradicate the evil in our world. This is the gift that Alice possesses. Good versus evil told in an attention-holding manner. I had a lot of pleasure writing this suspenseful story and I hope you will enjoy it; especially the surprise ending. WEAVING ALICE is included in this anthology. Books are available at all Amazon sites in both print and Kindle format. They are available at Create Space in print format only.

Dying To Be Popular ........

Dying To Be Popular is one of the short stories contained in SOCIAL STUDIES - Book One. She chooses to be obese and suffers the ridicule, unpopularity and bullying as a result. How very sad that no one ever takes the time to discover what it is that this young teenager is doing her best to hide. The number of teen suicides is a frightening statistic in our western society; one to which a reader's attention will be drawn through the reading of this story.

Feeling alone, alienated and unable to reach out to someone for help and understanding it's a sad fact that it is not uncommon for a teenager to reach out to food for comfort. Emotional eating that leads to this young girl's death reminds us that all addictions kill sooner or later in one way or another.

When he turns from his wife to his daughter she experiences pain beyond endurance. Is murder the only escape from his incestuous destruction?

Busy Retirement Years .....

Since retirement from the working world this woman has been working.  Since that day I have published 4 novels; 3 novellas, 4 anthologies; 1 personal growth manual and more than 60 short stories; not to mention several poems which have found their way into a variety of anthologies.

And very recently I was thrilled to collaborate with talented musician/composer John Cal (Johnny Tyger). For the first time ever I wrote song lyrics to which John beautifully composed the music and performed the song titled "Listen To Love".

In addition to all this I also do my best to keep up with my three blogs titled Calling All Writers; Small Town Authors; and Rhymes and Times Remembered. Whew! I have been busy. lol

I could be singing "I don't get out much anymore" but this writing adventure is what keeps me happily busy at home. I tell my friends it keeps me out of trouble and off the streets.
This is the work I absolutely enjoy.

The launch of SOCIAL STUDIES - Books one, two and three in both Kindle and Print Format is a new plateau for me from which I hope to achieve much more.

When I retired and began to write I had no idea that one day I would not only be an author of a published book but that I also could one day learn to be my own publisher. Wow! I guess this means that it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks. (Ki would agree)

My current work in progress is what will be my 5th novel titled "Crabapple Court". I plan its local Elliot Lake Book Launch in the fall of 2014.

But today I thank everyone who took the time to celebrate with me in this on-line book launch of SOCIAL STUDIES - Books one, two and three.

Without the support and encouragement over the years from Maggie Kirton at Wynterblue Publishing Canada; close family members and friends none of this would be possible.

And a special shout out to my daughter, talented artist & illustrator, Susan Ruby K. of http://yuneekpix.com Susan has designed the wonderful covers on all my books which are available in print format. She also creates great covers for other authors so if you are a writer look no further for your cover designer. She is remarkable and to work with her is a pleasure

On-line Book Launch of SOCIAL STUDIES - Books 1, 2 and 3 ..........
