I looks up to Leona thinking she be like my new mama; my smiling saviour but now Massa Alfred out the room she be the one to terrorize my heart. "Get your scrawny self out my way, boy! she say. Her smile done disappeared with the Master's departure. In its place I see my frightening future.
Next thing I know Wilbur be yanking my arm with his big, black fist and pulling me over to the corner of the kitchen. "See that box?" he say.
"Yes, sir."
"You see any wood in that box, boy?"
"No, sir."
"You get your nasty self out this house and go chop you some wood. I want to see this box filled with firewood," he ordered.
I picked up the axe and carried it out the back door of the big house. I stood between the big white pillars and stared down the hill at the little patchy grey shack that was my mama's home. "I wants to go home, Mama," I cry.
I don't hear no words but I remember what my Mama say. "Aint nobody done cares what you wants, son."
