an excerpt from short story titled A Stranger in a Strange Land
"I gazed at the two large bare feet on the snowy sidewalk. I followed my gaze up the long length of the trouser legs to the point where they met the red wind-burned upper body of a man whose chest was as naked as his feet. "Good grief! You must be freezing!"
At once I recognized the synergy between the homeless man and the sidewalk. It was like he belonged there and I was the intruder. I lifted myself up from the sidewalk, bent over, and rolled my pants leg back down so that the dripping blood was mostly hidden from view. I could not go to work in this condition. My plan was to go back home, clean and bandage my cut, call in to work, get changed, and then set off once more.
"I didn't see you coming," he repeated. "I really am sorry my big feet got in your way."
