Poetry from A to Z -- an excerpt

Poetry from A to Z - an excerpt

Here is one of the many poems contained in Poetry from A to Z.

"Only One"

Last time I looked there was only one
Only one of me
Call me any name you wish
Still only one of me.

If I can handle all the tags
Still knowing who I am
Why doubt that God won't know He's called
By any other name?

Keeping It Simple - an excerpt

Keeping It Simple - Imagine Being Whole  --  an excerpt

"The Heart Chakra has been called that perfect place where heaven and earth meet and, in so doing, when we make this connection, we are able to transform and integrate our dual nature; that of the body and of the mind and spirit.  This energy centre is the home of unconditional love with no agenda.  It is from here that we are able to feel, experience and express our love for self and for others.

From this chakra we give and we receive.

It is the  home of self-love; loving our strengths but also loving and respecting our limitations.  The inner child's first choice of residence is within the heart chakra.

It is from this place that you express grief.  Whether the loss is that of a loved one, a job, one's childhood, one's sense of self, or one's motivation to grow; grieving your losses is a spiritual process that encompasses all human emotions.  Through your heart chakra you experience shame, healing, and the essence of unconditional love."

Social Studies, Book Three - Weaving Alice plus eleven - an excerpt

Social Studies, Book Three - Weaving Alice plus Eleven

an excerpt from one of the short stories in this anthology
titled Freddie's Athabasca

"She never dreamed that they would have the opportunity to leave that depressing refugee camp in Turkey.  Her father, Frederick, used to say to Georgina, "Little girl, trust me; one day we will be free from this terrible bondage. Do not be afraid to look beneath what appears to be reality."

Georgina did trust her father but at the age of ten she sometimes found it difficult to look beneath anything or to believe his promises.  He would wander the camp and often he would talk to himself.  He used to talk to his wife, Gisella, about his dream of living freely on the Athabasca River.  Georgina's mother had faith in her husband.  While most people called him Frederick, his wife Gisella, called him her Freddie.

Gisella would also sometimes wander the camp.  To her friends she would talk about her Freddie's Athabasca.  And when she talked her eyes would brighten a cloudy day.  Georgina thought her mother was beautiful.  Her father, Freddie, thought so too.  He would call Gisella his daisy in a weed patch.

For a long time Georgina lived from day to depressing day with her parents in the refugee camp in Turkey.  On her twelfth birthday the blue sky turned black and crushed down upon her. Gisella died.  "Why did mama die, papa?" she begged.

"She was too beautiful to live in such an ugly place," Freddie responded."

Social Studies, Book Two - Shattered and Broken - an excerpt

Social Studies, Book Two - Shattered and Broken

An excerpt from one of the 12 short stories in this anthology titled
Francesca's Confession

"Claptrap!  I shout at the TV screen. "I'm sick to death of listening to all this corny romantic babble!  I can't tolerate five more minutes of this garbage!  It's just drivel; a waste of air space so advertisers can pedal their detergents!"  I push the off button on the remote plunging the living-room into sudden silence.

"Hey, I was watching that!" Harvey yells.

"It's crap!  I don't want to watch it!"  I yell back.

I turn my head and look over at Harvey wrapped in his lazy-boy chair.  He's holding a bag of Smart Pop in one hand and a can of Molson's Canadian in the other.  I love my Harvey but I wonder whatever happened to the good looking guy he used to be?  That fellow left a long time ago and I have no idea where he went.  The large lump in the chair is a sad caricature of the man I thought I was marrying.

I wonder if there's ever been a moment when things were somewhat placid in our lives.  Maybe many years ago but today nothing comes to mind.

"Geez, Harvey, you're getting your popcorn all over the rug.  I just vacuumed this morning.  What a slob!"  I shout as I bend my large body over and reach down to pick up the popcorn bits sprinkled all over my new yellow carpet.

"Francesca, you sound just like your mother; rude, crude, and offensive!  I was in the middle of watching that movie so turn it back on!"

Social Studies,Book One -  Dying To Be Popular

An excerpt from Find Firinn - one of the dozen stories in this short story anthology.

"Uncle Farlan is a lowlander in the Scottish County of Berwickshire.  He is no happier about the upcoming journey than I am.  "Forba, it's an unhappy day," he says to me.  "Your parents have chosen to emigrate from Scotland and, sadly, you and I have no choice but to follow in their footsteps.  We are Scots and we belong to Scotland.  Aye, child, we may border with England but what is the truth of the matter?  What are we, lass?"

"We are Scots, Uncle Farlan."

"Aye, and no matter where in the world we are forced to live, what are we, lass?"

"We are Scots, Uncle Farlan."

"Aye, 'tis firinn, Forba."

"What is firinn, Uncle Farlan?"

"What is firinn?  The child asks what is firinn."

"I do."

"Firinn means truth, child.  Let it be a lesson to you now that no matter where in the world you live you must always seek and find firinn,   Do you  promise, lass?"

"I do, Uncle Farlan."

"Good girl, Forba.  Let it be our secret word from this day forward."

All Them Houses - an excerpt

All Them Houses - an excerpt

"My mother accompanied me the day I visited Dr. Kingstone whose office at that time was on Vaughan Road in Toronto.  His swift diagnosis was pregnancy.

My mother's comment to the good doctor that day, I remember well. She's too young to be having a baby.

I also remember the doctor's response.  No, not at all.  She's at the perfect age and she is well built.

I still remember my shock when the doctor said these words.  He caught himself quickly and said, What I mean is she has wide hips.  She is built well for having babies.

I still laugh remembering that day.  But it was true, my wide hips were to be a blessing.

I was eighteen years old and I was expecting my first child.

Dinner at Seven - an excerpt

Dinner at Seven - an excerpt

"It is difficult, to say the least, but somehow I regain and keep my composure throughout the interviews.  Only Derek's presence sustains me but when the last of the three candidates leave his office, Derek speaks up.  "Okay, Marsha and David, I am determined to put an end to the nonsense that is turning two supposedly mature people into kindergarten brats.  I insist that we all have lunch together."

I make my excuses but Derek will not take no for an answer.  Sometimes it is tough being a woman in a man's world.

I can see that David's face mirrors my own sadness.  I walk with the two men out of the office and the tears that I have so bravely kept in check throughout the interviews slip unbidden down my cheeks.  Feeling like a fool I excuse myself to visit the ladies' room.  "I will meet you shortly downstairs in the restaurant," I say.

Professionalism can only go so far!"

When God Gives Us Spring - an excerpt

When God Gives Us Spring  -  an excerpt

"A thought crossed my mind that maybe Lucinda had a husband.  Maybe Lucinda had children.  Maybe Lucinda wouldn't want to be with me.  Maybe Lucinda wouldn't even remember me.

These heavy thoughts landed atop my head and pushed me down on the dirt.  I leaned my weary back against the side of a shack and I began to weep.  It was then that I heard the woman's quiet but questioning voice.

"What's that noise?"

I heard no answer to the woman's question.  Was her husband asleep?  Did this woman live alone?

Then again, "What's that noise outside my window?"

I stopped my weeping and almost stopped my breathing in an effort to be still, to be quiet.

That's when I heard the footsteps approach."

Ellen and The Hummingtree - an excerpt

Ellen and The Hummingtree - an excerpt

"For hours I, the foolish one, had been waiting at the wrong gate.  Now I realized that these gates were at the entrance to an old abandoned cemetery.  I had heard about this place but in all my years of living in this town I had never visited here before.  Why would anyone want to visit an abandoned burial ground?

Why is this woman here?  And why is she crying?

I approached her and when I was just a few feet away from where she was kneeling I stopped in wonder and amazement.  I could scarcely believe what I was seeing.  I didn't know whether to remain where I was or whether to move closer in order to speak with the elderly lady.  It was a difficult thing to know what to do next.

I decided to stay where I was in order to respect the woman's prayerful privacy.  Pines, Maples and White Birches mingled together around the clearing that constituted the old burial ground.  I could see some gravestones though most were overgrown with God's colourful blanket of weeds and wildflowers.

The crying woman was kneeling beside a rectangular shaped grey stone.  The chiseled words were made illegible by years of weather.

I inched myself closer.  Now I could see that her brown skinned face was as chiseled as the headstone.  Looking at her I could not help but think, "This woman is a very old soul.  She has met life and survived."

I did not mean to; I did not want to; but I could not hold back the invasive cough that began way down in my stomach and worked its way up through my body and out of my mouth.

She turned her head at once and looked at me.

I don't know why but that's when I started to cry again.  Perhaps it was the sight of the tearful eyes that met my own.  "Hello," is all she said.

"Hello," I replied.

"I'm glad you have come," she said.  "I'm growing tired and it is getting chilly.  Creator told me someone is coming to receive the gift and I have been waiting a very long time.  I'm glad you are here."  She smiled.

Moose Road, a Canadian Tragedy - an excerpt

Moose Road, a Canadian Tragedy - an excerpt

"Judge Terrance Gordon had studiously gone over and over again all the information pertinent to the Moose Road collision.  Now he spent his morning shuffling through the reports that had been given to him the month prior by Stanley Shaw.  The reports had been prepared by both insurance investigators; Stanley Shaw and Marsha Mandell.  He had also viewed the photos taken at the scene of the accident.

Judge Gordon was contemplative.  An observer would especially take note of the permanent creases in his forehead which sat upon bushy white eyebrows.  He was tired.  Sometimes he wondered if he should consider moving up his retirement date.  Nothing was ever simple anymore.

It wasn't easy reaching a fair judgment when the older he became the more he realized that nothing is black or white; hot or cold; wet or dry.  That fuzzy gray area seemed to grow larger over the years while his white hair grew sparser."

Beyond The Blue - an excerpt

Beyond The Blue - an excerpt

"During the short walk to David's house the two boys shared a comforting closeness that only best friends can experience.  "Thanks for inviting me to your house tonight, Tony.  It's much more fun at your house than it is at mine."

"Hey, David, come on over anytime you want," Anthony offered.

"Thanks buddy.  You know sometimes with my dad spending so many hours away from home at work and my mom wrapped up in women's fashion magazines I feel really alone in my house."

Anthony immediately thought of Enigami.  He smiled and, throwing his arm around his good friend's shoulder, he said, "Take it from me, you're never alone, David."

Crabapple Court - an excerpt

Crabapple Court - an excerpt

"With a sigh she has to accept that what is done cannot be undone.  There is no way I can change what has taken place, she thinks, as she makes her way down her own driveway to retrieve the morning papers.
With her frustration level at an all-time high she complains aloud to no one there.  "Why can't these lazy kids deliver the papers to the door?"  She can't believe what is before her eyes!  Well, at least I'm dressed in my track suit and not in my bathrobe like a lot of the women on the boardwalk.  I see some of them still have curlers in their hair.  Good grief!  Don't they care what they look like on TV?

Heather's thoughts are like jellybeans in a jar; too many of them and all piled one on top of the other.  TV?  Oh, my god, and here I am in my track suit.  I should have dressed properly.  Better yet, I should have stayed in the house.

She has reached the end of her driveway and picked up from the grass at the foot of her lawn the three newspapers.  She picks up all three but unfolds The Fairmont Times first.   The headline reads SEARCH FOR SUSAN STARTS THIS MORNING.

That explains the massive gathering across the road, Heather realizes.  She begins to make her way back up the driveway toward her house but in no time at all she is ganged up on and surrounded by TV cameras and noisy reporters.

"Mrs, Martin, will you answer some questions for us?"

Unsure what to do, Heather keeps walking toward her house.  "I have no comments.  I've just come out for my newspapers."

"Mrs. Martin, you gave Mrs. Donnelly the injection that put her to sleep.  Why didn't you wait for the police to arrive before you did that?"

How do they know that?  Heather quickens her pace.

Recompense - an excerpt

Recompense -  an excerpt

'Biting the bullet, I get straight to the point. "I did not realize that my sharing a meal with another man would upset you and make you unhappy, Maurice."

"No, no, it's all right, Alison.  I'm the one who left you on your own last evening.  I am happy for you that you found companionship."

"Do you mean that, Maurice?"

"Yes, of course I mean it.  If I sound disappointed it's only that I have learned that a friend of mine is also staying in the hotel at this time.  I've talked with him and he has invited both of us to join him for lunch today.  He wants us to meet the lady in his life.  I had hoped you could join me but it's okay.  I can meet them on my own later today."

"I'm sorry to disappoint you, Maurice, but there is something more that I need to tell you and I am afraid it will only serve to further disappoint you."

I watch him pick up his coffee mug to take a sip.  I can see that his hand is trembling.  Can I really leave this man who has been my friend for all these many years?"

"What is it you want to tell me, Alison?"

His face looks defeated.  I can't do it.  I simply cannot tell him.  I will tell him later, I resolve.'

Sara, a Canadian Saga -- an excerpt

Sara, a Canadian Saga - an excerpt

'Through her quiet tears she begged, "Then take me with you, Roy.  Take us with you and somehow we'll manage.  You can't just up and leave your children, Roy.  They need their father.  I need you."

He held her in his arms.  Together they rocked back and forth on the bed.  "I love you, Sara."  With an awkward, soft hand he touched her face and dried her tears.  "But ya know I can't take ya with me."

She pulled out of his arms.  "I'm coming with you, Roy Thompson, and I won't hear another word about it!"  She was screaming again.

Fit to be tied, he rose from the bed.  He paced back and forth.  Soon they were shouting at each other again.  "In the first place," Roy bellowed, "we don't have enough money for all the train fares!  In the second place there's no place in Toronto for you and the kids to stay!  Use yer head, woman!"  With no warning he was caught up in a fit of coughing.  He hacked as though he was going to choke to death.  Finally he could breathe again.  He lit a cigarette to calm himself down and continued to pace back and forth, back and forth.

She cried.

The Silent Star Plus a Dozen Selections - an excerpt from "In Control"

The Silent Star Plus a Dozen Selections

An excerpt from short story titled "In Control"

"She doesn't care whose life she messes up," Christine agreed.  "Dave is going to be furious with me.  He's paid a lot of money for the tickets.  There's no way he can get a refund at this late date.  I'm going to talk to Mary and see if she can't slot someone else in for Saturday night."

"Well," Rose stated matter of factly, "you can only try.  God loves a tryer.  But take it from me, Christine, there's no point in arguing with the likes of her.  You know you can't win before you start so save your energy."

"I know, I know.  Half her problem is that she has never had a boyfriend in her life.  The old bag is jealous of anyone else who does."

Nodding her head Rose lifted the timepiece she wore on a chain around her neck. "Come on  Chris, it's nearly eight a.m., time to get the show on the road."

"Okay, Rosebud.  I'll get the coffee going while you lift the blinds.  Queen Mary will be here soon.  If I'm going to talk to her about Saturday night I want her to be in as good a mood as possible."
