'Biting the bullet, I get straight to the point. "I did not realize that my sharing a meal with another man would upset you and make you unhappy, Maurice."
"No, no, it's all right, Alison. I'm the one who left you on your own last evening. I am happy for you that you found companionship."
"Do you mean that, Maurice?"
"Yes, of course I mean it. If I sound disappointed it's only that I have learned that a friend of mine is also staying in the hotel at this time. I've talked with him and he has invited both of us to join him for lunch today. He wants us to meet the lady in his life. I had hoped you could join me but it's okay. I can meet them on my own later today."
"I'm sorry to disappoint you, Maurice, but there is something more that I need to tell you and I am afraid it will only serve to further disappoint you."
I watch him pick up his coffee mug to take a sip. I can see that his hand is trembling. Can I really leave this man who has been my friend for all these many years?"
"What is it you want to tell me, Alison?"
His face looks defeated. I can't do it. I simply cannot tell him. I will tell him later, I resolve.'
