An excerpt from Find Firinn - one of the dozen stories in this short story anthology.
"Uncle Farlan is a lowlander in the Scottish County of Berwickshire. He is no happier about the upcoming journey than I am. "Forba, it's an unhappy day," he says to me. "Your parents have chosen to emigrate from Scotland and, sadly, you and I have no choice but to follow in their footsteps. We are Scots and we belong to Scotland. Aye, child, we may border with England but what is the truth of the matter? What are we, lass?"
"We are Scots, Uncle Farlan."
"Aye, and no matter where in the world we are forced to live, what are we, lass?"
"We are Scots, Uncle Farlan."
"Aye, 'tis firinn, Forba."
"What is firinn, Uncle Farlan?"
"What is firinn? The child asks what is firinn."
"I do."
"Firinn means truth, child. Let it be a lesson to you now that no matter where in the world you live you must always seek and find firinn, Do you promise, lass?"
"I do, Uncle Farlan."
"Good girl, Forba. Let it be our secret word from this day forward."
