At The Edge of His World
AT THE EDGE OF HIS WORLD is a short story for children. I was inspired to write this story when my own stone garden retaining wall was being demolished and a new more modern and stable one was being constructed. My own chipmunk was frantic and I felt very sorry that we were, of necessity, destroying his home. It was either take the wall down or wait a while longer while it fell down of its own accord. I was also very relieved once my new wall was built to see the little fellow under the Forsythia bush near a small hole in the ground which I knew was his brand new entrance into his new home ........ so this is a short fictional story for children based on this author's true experience. I hope your children enjoy the story and I hope you do too.

Dying To Be Popular -- a short story free today on Amazon sites
A young teen's fashion sense is determined by what can be found to fit in Pennington's. She can no longer pretend to be happy; not even to please her mother. Why did she suddenly desire to be unattractive? When no one arrives for her birthday party she knows what she needs to do.
DYING TO BE POPULAR
She chooses to be obese and suffers the ridicule, unpopularity and bullying as a result. How very sad that no one ever takes the time to discover what it is that this young teenager is doing her best to hide. The number of teen suicides is a frightening statistic in our western society; one to which a reader's attention will be drawn through the reading of this story. Feeling alone, alienated and unable to reach out to someone for help and understanding it's a sad fact that it is not uncommon for a teenager to reach out to food for comfort. Emotional eating that leads to this young girl's death reminds us that all addictions kill sooner or later in one way or another.

The relationship between Uncle Farlan and his young niece is enduring. Yes, he taught her to respect and always remember their Scottish heritage but even more important is the loyalty and love the two share throughout life up to the day of his death. Alzheimer Disease is a terrible thief. But even Alzheimer could not steal Farlan's memory of the secret he shared with his niece.

REAWAKENING
Reawakening is a novel that reveals itself in a place called Notsew. Here is a story that takes the reader on a journey, along with the story's characters, far from earth. In this place called Notsew the powers that be have great curiosity. They want to learn more about why human beings do the things they do and mostly they want to learn about some strange phenomena best described as emotion. The story's characters find themselves unwilling participants in an experiment.
I dedicated this story to my dear sister, Muriel, because she just loved it. Of all the things I had written this was her favourite. And though my sister is now also far from earth the love we shared continues to make me feel as close to her as ever.
Although I didn't know it at the time I wrote Reawakening, I believe there were greater forces at work. Why do I think this? Because the love my sister & I continue to share is the kind of love shared by the characters in this story. Nothing and no one - not even death - can lessen the power of love.
Audrey Austin is happily retired and living with her best friend, Brian, in Elliot Lake, ON. "Reawakening" is Audrey's second novel. Her first novel, "SARA, a Canadian Saga", is in its fourth print run and, like Reawakening, is now available in both Print and Kindle format on all Amazon sites

About Reawakening:
Unlike many of their acquaintances they stayed in love and they stayed married for many years. Jim was now an old man, even by earth's standards, when he suffered the fatal coronary. He left his young wife a childless widow. She mourned. She grieved. She never remarried. Jim was her only love. Linda grew old as her husband before her had grown old. She died a peaceful death.
And then it happened . . .

Editorial Reviews
Review
With regard to this book let me share with you one review by Maggie Kirton who is the Executive Director of Wynterblue Publishing Canada.
She writes, "Every now and then a manuscript comes across my desk that completely captivates me. Austin has reached inside the human heart and removed all boundaries pertaining to everlasting love ... and her ability to play with the English language successfully is astounding.
Austin's Reawakening is a must read. It will take you into a land not far from your heart and bring you back to earth again believing that all things are possible with love and hope."
Another review of REAWAKENING:
" Let me first wipe my droplets of moisture from my eyes. Some shed from sadness of a love so strong and true, that never seems to be a " togetherness of two the way I would hope. Then some shed for the amazing job Austin did in making me laugh at the craziness of our "human" lives.
"Reawakening" is a story I could not give anything less than 5 stars too. It is a love story, mixed with sci-fi, also mixed with drama and the comedy that sneaks up if you have the ability to laugh at oneself. Would I go as far as calling this book a romance...no I cannot! It is a book of love, true love, something many think they know, but will realize if by this story very few may actually have it right. A love on earth were age, appearance were not important to the two involved, happiness, comfort, and love was without a question in their lives. A must read for men and women.

Recompense - a novella -- free today only at all Amazon sites
RECOMPENSE - a novella is free today only at all Amazon sites.
Maurice Wilson lives in Salt River, a small town near Cape Town, South Africa. He is the son of a black father and a Caucasian mother. After the sudden death of his parents he makes the decision to move to High River, Alberta, Canada, the place of his mother’s birth in search of a sense of belonging. He becomes a Canadian citizen, is employed as a mail carrier for Canada Post. The morning of his first day on the job he meets Alison Pierce, a plain woman whose silent passions run deep. Shortly into her relationship with Maurice all her hopes for fulfillment plummet however she continues to live with him for more than twenty-five years. In their later years Maurice and Alison become acquainted with the Internet and with the Senior Befriender Chat Room. When temptation with the name of Conrad enters their lives the shared bonds of loyalty and trust are put in jeopardy. Will deception rule the day?
Bringing two worlds together was my goal in bringing together Maurice from Salt River, Capetown, South Africa and Alison, a postal clerk in High River, Alberta, Canada. Cultures blend but passion is lacking. I thought of these two people living together as a couple; not too unlike many couples who live together for years in unsatisfactory boring relationships. Then I thought what if, when they reach their senior years, something happens to wake them up? That's when I decided to introduce Conrad and the Senior Befriender Chatroom. Writing "RECOMPENSE' was an enjoyable challenge. Most of us are unused to reading about senior men and women in romantic situations .......... I thought maybe it is time that I write something that will make us see our elders through new eyes.

He gives her one last mission to complete on earth. Will she achieve success and be granted entry by St. Peter?
Short stories are my pleasure to write. "The Big Book" was especially fun. I am quite convinced that God has a wonderful sense of humour and in this story my imagination clearly visualized this woman learning her life lessons in a most unique way. Ellen is a woman I came to know well during the writing of my third novel Ellen and The Hummingtree. She often puzzled me yet she also had the ability to make me laugh and cry. I grew to love her. And the more I came to know her I began to realize that she truly is a composite of the many caring spiritual women I have known throughout my life. Alzheimer is a dreadful disease and Ellen's victimization is a heartbreak. My writing of Ellen and The Hummingtree comes straight from the heart. I hope you will love her as I do.
Some reviews of Ellen and The Hummingtree:
A GOOD read!
By susan on January 5, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition
A very relatable story with an unusual twist, the connection Ellen has with others both visible and invisible is a journey into sometimes comical, sometimes intensely personal and sometimes very real and ordinary. It's an enjoyable read that left me more familiar with my own beliefs and hopes.
The Write Read for a Wintry Afternoon
By Phyllis Humby on February 20, 2013
Format: Kindle Edition
My books have been gathering dust and creating stress. Yes, it stresses me out when everything seems to take precedence over reading. Anyway, today I finished a book that I couldn't wait to receive in the mail - months ago − Ellen and the Hummingtree by Audrey Austin, a writer from Elliott Lake.
I had the good fortune to meet Audrey online and become acquainted with her writing. If memory serves correctly, I first noticed Audrey's work on Commuterlit.com, a site that has featured my work as well.
Ellen and the Hummingtree is an interesting book about a woman of deep faith who has a unique coping mechanism. She speaks to God. Now, I know you will argue that many of us speak to God. But Ellen believes God lives inside a large yellow quartz rock in her backyard. Oh, and of course He speaks to her too. There's a little hole in the top of the rock. Never mind, just read the book.
It is a collection of well-written stories that weave back and forth through the emotional circumstances of a woman's life. These stories delve into her relationships as a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Oh, and cousin - I forgot about her cousin Marielle.
In my opinion - only my opinion - the theme of this book is fear. I know that some of you who are familiar with this book may harrumph at that statement but a book is very personal. It's interpreted differently by each reader. That's why I love talking to my first readers. I'm fascinated by the interpretation of my work. Each person sees something different or relates with a different character. I digress (as always).
Audrey's character, Ellen, is on her own to raise two children. Fear. Her grandson, who has a learning disability, is bullied at school. Fear. God lives in a rock in her backyard. That would scare the crap out of me. (My attempt at humour - I'm sorry)
Ellen has many fears, as do we all. The fear of growing old and senile, the fear of having to give up a home to live in a facility. Then there is the ultimate fear. Of growing older and older and older, when all she wants is to re-unite with all the loved ones that have passed on. You do remember that I said this was strictly my opinion.
Near the end of the book there is a chapter I Need You to Remember Me. I remember reading that story, or at least an edited version, some time ago. Please tell me, Audrey, that this was a published short story at some point. If not, I had an incredible déjà vu moment. I liked the story the first time I read it - otherwise I never would have remembered it - and it will remain indelible in my mind.
The last chapter Time to Go Home is melancholy and poignant. I have witnessed death and thought about life after death. I appreciate Audrey Austin's rendering. This chapter was a fitting ending to a thought provoking book with a unique approach.
Ellen and the Hummingtree by Audrey Austin; a good read for a wintry afternoon.
Ellen and the Hummingtree
By celticfrogreviews on February 20, 2013
Format: Kindle Edition
Ellen and the Hummingtree is the story of Ellen and a rock through which she speaks to God. The rock moves with her as she lives her life. Ellen doesn't have an easy life, but the rock encourages her and gives her courage. Through Ellen we meet her family and close friends, and especially the voice of God that whispers to her through the chunk of yellow quartz.
Ellen is very human with her share of flaws. The story is as much about her learning to accept those flaws in herself and others as anything else. She grows substantially by the close of the book. There are times when I wanted to give her a good talking to, and other times when she shows grace and humility.
Audrey has created a memorable character in Ellen. She is very well portrayed and has a wonderful complexity. The story moves back and forth in time as Ellen explores her life. The important movement isn't chronological but her development of love and faith through the rock in her garden.
I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it for those who like strong women characters.

My Books .....
My friends and family know I've been doing a lot of writing but even I am surprised to learn that if I include the short stories that dare to stand alone I now have 50 Kindle offerings. These include 5 novels; 3 novellas; 4 short story anthologies; three books for children; and Keeping It Simple which is so far my only book on personal growth. I say so far because I have plans to write more in this genre.
These 50 include seven books which are also available in print format. All 50 are available on all Amazon sites in Kindle format and my author page is found at http://www.amazon.com/author/audreyaustin
The seven books which are available in print format are novels titled Sara, a Canadian Saga; Moose Road, a Canadian Tragedy; Ellen and The Hummmingtree (most recent book to go into 2nd edition); Short Story anthologies titled Social Studies - Books One, Two and three and also Keeping It Simple - a personal growth manual which keeps the focus on the trinity of the 7 major chakras, meditation and psychospiritual therapy.
I want to thank everyone who buys and reads my offerings. I very much appreciate your support and encouragement to continue. It is my plan to have Reawakening as well as The Silent Star Plus a Dozen published in print format before I continue with my next novel, my current work in progress, Crabapple Court which will be published in both Kindle and Print Format.
